Artifact Trunks

 

The Gillespie County Historical Society (GCHS) has a vast collection of artifacts. Teachers can contact the Archives/Programs/Tours director by calling 830-997-2835 or emailing to arrange for a trunk showing in their classroom. Interpreters from the museum will bring the artifact trunk to the school to share with the students.

 

Four Tours Offered by the Gillespie County Historical Society

 

Let the Pioneer Museum be your ticket back to early Fredericksburg. Docents will guide your group through the history of Fredericksburg as you examine buildings from a variety of time periods, from the early 1840's to the 1920's. Learn of the early settlers' challenges after leaving Germany, as they carved out a future in an unfamiliar environment.

 

Celebrate their accomplishments through the structures they created. See some of the typical furnishings, tools, and treasured mementoes. Pause a moment in the shade of the pecan trees and reflect on the contrasts of “the good old days” with your lifestyle today.

 

GERMAN MEAL TOURS

 

Enjoy a homemade, catered German meal that is served either in our Social Hall or on the grounds of the Pioneer Museum. The German meal is offered separately from the tour or in conjunction with a tour. The menu includes Opa’s sausage, German potato salad, sauerkraut, homemade bread, dessert, tea and coffee.

 

Cost: $15 per person for the German meal...does not include admission to the museum. A down payment of the total amount of the cost of the meals, along with the guaranteed number of guests, is required 15 days prior to the tour to hold your date.

 

CUSTOM TOURS

 

Let us customize an itinerary of local points of interest (including homes, churches, country schools, cemeteries, and historic sites) that is tailored to your group's needs. Custom tours include a German Meal for a complete Fredericksburg historic experience.

SCHOOL TOURS

 

Memorable lessons and school tours are available for students from preschool through college. Let us create a custom itinerary to fit the time and needs of your class.

 

Cost: All Gillespie County school groups are free for the basic tour. School groups outside Gillespie County are $3.00 per person with one complimentary adult ticket per 10 students.

 

GROUP TOURS

 

Give your group the complete Pioneer Museum experience. Our guides will interpret historical relevance of each museum complex building and provide helpful information and a personal touch to enhance appreciation of exhibits.

 

Cost: $4.50 per person – 15-person minimum. Deposit required, which is 50% of the tour cost.

 

**Hands on Activities: For an additional $3.00 per admission, you can add hands on activities to your tour, such as rope making, quilting, playing games of yesterday, learning about one-room school lessons, churning butter, washing clothes with a scrub board, learning about seed art, and making corn husk dolls.
