Schandua House
The Schandua House, built in the 1880s, is located at 111 East Austin Street. This house was purchased by John Schandua, a local merchant, shortly after his marriage to Bertha (Klein) in 1883. The front room, called “Die Stube,” served as a bedroom and living area. The back room was used as a bedroom for their children. Gingerbread woodwork accents the posts on the front porch.
This house was never outfitted with plumbing or electricity. It is furnished in the period of its early use, and is said to be a “house that is always ready for company.”
Over 125 years old, it has been home to many families and served as a Sunday School house for Bethany Lutheran Church for many years.
The Schandua House is open upon request for group tours. Learn more about Tours at the Pioneer Museum!
