Special Heritage Edition of 1983 Eakin Press reprint. From preface of 1983 edition: "In 1846...only few books about Texas were available to the prospective [German immigrant] settlers in their native language, German. The years between 1846 and 1850 saw a predictable increase in the number of immigration guides and descriptions of the land, but probably none was more accurate, nor written in greater or more vivid detail than that of...Roemer, appraising his sojourn to Texas , 1845 to 1847, and published in Bonnin 1849. His work remains today exceptionally good reading, the fresh and youthful narrative of a twenty-eight-year-old scientist about a fresh and youthful land, in his own words, 'a beautiful land of meadows which faces a bright future.'" The original work was translated from the German in 1935 by Oswald Mueller. It was published as a contribution to the Texas Centennial. The 1983 reprint duplicates the 1935 translation exactly.
